Sometimes these white backgrounds are just too much. So, I created a dark version of the default monobook skin for mediawiki. You can take a look at it in live action here.And here is the download of the skin if you want to try it out. Just unzip it into your mediawiki/skins directory and put a copy of your logo at /mediawiki/skins/common/images/wiki_dark.jpg

Sorry for the link being gone for so long. It is back up now. It is working with mediawiki 1.18.1, although I can only imagine that monobook has changed so much since the monobook_dark skin was created that the dark version probably needs to be updated.
